Well… it’s been a minute.
A really long minute.
I had every intention of keeping up with this little corner of my website. I had ideas written down. I had topics I wanted to talk about. I even had those little moments where I thought, I really need to write that blog post.
And then I didn’t.
I’ll blame the usual suspects: life, work, family, projects, busy days, tired evenings…
But if I’m being completely honest, sometimes the simplest answer is the right one.
I procrastinated.
And isn’t it funny how easily we can convince ourselves that we’ll get to something later?
I’ll do it tomorrow.
I’ll start Monday.
I’ll have more time next week.
I’ll get around to it when things slow down.
Except sometimes things don’t slow down.
Sometimes there is always another load of laundry, another email, another project, another appointment, another thing that feels more important in the moment.
And before you know it, weeks have turned into months.
I think procrastination is about more than simply putting things off. Sometimes we’re waiting for the right time. Sometimes we’re waiting until we feel motivated. Sometimes we’re afraid we won’t do something perfectly, so we don’t do it at all.
I’ve certainly been guilty of that one.
But homes have taught me a little something about this.
There will almost always be a project waiting for us.
That leaky faucet we keep meaning to fix.
The closet we’ve been promising ourselves we’d clean out.
The paint that’s been sitting in the garage for six months.
The little repair we’ve decided isn’t quite urgent yet.
And sometimes those little things are harmless.
Other times, putting something off only makes it harder later.
Real estate is full of big decisions that can be easy to procrastinate on, too. Maybe it’s finally figuring out what your home is worth. Maybe it’s making a list of repairs you’ve been avoiding. Maybe it’s getting your finances organized because someday you’d like to buy a home.
You don’t have to do everything today.
But you do have to start somewhere.
And I think that’s the part I’ve been reminding myself lately.
Done is often better than perfect.
One small step counts.
One email.
One phone call.
One drawer cleaned out.
One project started.
One paragraph written.
Sometimes the hardest part isn’t actually doing the thing.
It’s deciding that today is the day we stop waiting for the perfect time.
So, after months of putting this off, here I am.
Writing again.
Not because life suddenly became less busy or because I magically found a few extra hours in the day.
I just decided to start.
And maybe that’s your little reminder today, too.
Whatever you’ve been putting off, you don’t have to finish it all today.
Just take the first step.
The rest can come tomorrow.
But at least you’ll have started.
